About

St. Margaret's Chapel is a small guesthouse located within the Žďár nad Sázavou chateau grounds, just a 5-minute walk from the Church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora (Green Hill), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Housed in a former Baroque chapel, the construction of which began as early as 1700, you will find cozy bed and breakfast accommodation. In addition, there is also a private sauna, a hall with a fireplace, and a well-stocked cellar with Alsatian wine. Surrounding the chapel is a pleasant relaxation garden, tastefully complemented by sculptures from the local ceramic workshop, which is part of the property.

The String Bag - Vavřín Krčil

Vavřín Krčil, the inventor and promoter of the legendary string bag ("síťovka"), spent his childhood and youth at St. Margaret's Chapel. It was here, at the age of 11, that he became acquainted with the craft of net-making, which captivated him and instilled in him a sense of honest work and tradition.

In 1940, Krčil bought the Chapel from his mother, saving it from decay. The Chapel thus became not only a symbol of his connection to his hometown and craft but also a reminder of his humble beginnings.

The string bag is therefore not only a practical object but also a symbol of Krčil's ingenuity and skill, who managed to transform an ordinary item into an iconic symbol of Czech design.

St. Margaret's Chapel and the string bag thus form a connection between history, tradition, and craftsmanship. Krčil's legacy, in the form of the Chapel and the string bag, continues to live in the hearts of Žďár nad Sázavou, reminding everyone of the importance of artisanal tradition and local identity.
